چکیده

English) Abstract: The present study investigated how different graphical overviews affected learning with hypertexts, given differing levels of learners’ prior knowledge, on N = 87 students. Overall, the learners seemed to profit more from global overviews (of the overall structure) than from local overviews (of several substructures). This was true in particular when the subject of investigation were learning outcomes at the macro-level of the text. With low prior knowledge, the learners showed better comprehension when they had access to a graphical summary of content. For learners with high prior knowledge, a more demanding graphical browser type was particularly useful when the text required deeper comprehension at the micro-level. The influence of node sequence and extraneous load induced by graphical overviews on hypertext learning

The effects of four hypertext learning environments with a hierarchical graphical overview were studied on the coherence of the node sequence, extraneous load and comprehension. Navigation patterns were influenced by the type of overview provided (i.e., dynamic, static) and whether navigation was restricted (i.e., restricted, non-restricted). It was hypothesised that redundant use of the overvi...

How Prior Knowledge and Text Coherence Affect Eye Fixations in Hypertext Overviews

Graphical overviews are text devices aimed to foster learning by conveying in a schematic way the text structure. Despite its importance in current learning systems such hypertext, psychological research does not agree on how overviews affect comprehension. Little is known about how hypertext readers process graphical overviews, and how this processing influence comprehension. In the present pa...
